NRL State of Origin 2012 Game 1 Preview:
NSW have named four debutants for the opening 2012 Origin game at Melbourne’s Etihad Stadium (Docklands).
After ill-fated stints at Canberra and
the Sydney Roosters, the enigmatic Todd Carney has been awarded for his
career rebirth at Cronulla with his first Origin jumper. He will partner
former Roosters teammate Mitchell Pearce, replacing the out-of-favour
Jamie Soward at five-eighth. North Queensland’s James Tamou, who
controversially chose to play for Australia in the recent Anzac Test
(despite his Kiwi heritage), will debut in the forwards. Manly’s Jamie
Buhrer and Tony Williams (coming off a seven-match ban) will also debut
on the interchange, joining Sea Eagles teammates Brett and Glenn
Stewart. Robbie Farah makes an Origin comeback (his first game since
2009), replacing Michael Ennis.
NSW have focused on a speedy backline of
Brett Stewart, Akuila Uate, Michael Jennings (despite being demoted to
the Windsor NSW Cup team), Josh Morris and Jarryd Hayne to combat QLD’s
big men.
Queensland’s biggest question – who
would replace Darren Lockyer – has been answered by Johnathan Thurston
shifting to five-eighth and Cooper Cronk stepping into halfback. Brent
Tate replaces the injured Jharal Yow Yeh, while Corey Parker has been
omitted. Brisbane’s Matt Gillett and Manly’s Daly Cherry-Evans will make
their debuts.
While the opening game has again been
shifted to the ‘neutral’ territory of Melbourne’s Etihad Stadium, the
large contingent of Queenslanders in the Melbourne Storm (not to mention
the rivalry between Victoria and NSW) should tip the balance towards
the Maroons.
